2018 Halloweek: UW Style

You don’t have to drive to Pullman and enter Cougar territory to have a spooktacular Halloweek. This year, stay in Husky territory and check out these Halloween parties that are much closer and friendly to your wallet.

From the City of Destiny to the Emerald City, there are plenty of parties to crash this Halloweek and Dia de los Muertos. Have a drink or two and dance until security kicks you out, Halloween is the perfect time to let loose and have fun. Let’s just hope you don’t have midterms the next day.

Here are some tips to conquer this year’s Halloween and Día de los Muertos:

FUN FACT: EL DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS IS NOT A MEXICAN HALLOWEEN

Día de los Muertos is a celebration in Mexican culture that commemorates deceased friends, family and loved ones. It is believed that at midnight on Oct. 31, the souls of all deceased children come down from heaven and reunite with their families on Nov. 1, while the souls of deceased adults come visit Nov. 2. Halloween is often seen as a dark night of terror and mischief, whereas Día de los Muertos is a two-day celebration of color and life-affirming joy.

STEER CLEAR OF APPROPRIATING PEOPLE’S CULTURE

It’s a no-brainer to not do blackface, yellowface, brownface or even whiteface, but this is a friendly reminder in case you forgot: Dressing up as a cultural stereotype is never OK. You shouldn’t paint your skin to match someone else’s, even if you have all good intentions — just don’t do it. Plus, there are plenty of costumes to choose from, and being another race isn’t funny or impressive. It just makes you look like an uncreative asshole. Do better, be better.

DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE — OPT FOR A RIDESHARE OR CARPOOL

To save yourself a ticket or an accident, use Lyft or Uber to make it to your destination and back in one piece. Use Uber promo codes GOLD or RIDEAPPS to get $10 off your first ride. And for Lyft, use code NEWUSER10 to get two $5 credits, or use 20LYFTPROMO to get 10 $2 ride credits. With these great discounts that make your ride practically free, you really don’t have a reason to drink and drive.
