Six Things to Do This Fall

Activities near campus you can do during your free time

With the start of school and return of busy schedules, stress can be overwhelming. It’s important to take time to do things we enjoy or even try new things. There are tons of activities around UWT campus and downtown Tacoma to experience from the Washington State History Museum right across the street to the Point Defiance Park only a short drive away.

The Washington State History Museum is located just across Pacific Ave., which makes it the perfect place to learn more about the beautiful state we live in. Activities include The Great Hall of Washington History, Model Railroad, and so much more. The third Thursday of every month is free from 3pm to 8pm, giving you plenty of time to learn all sorts of history about Washington.

The Tacoma Art Museum (TAM) is also just a short walk down Pacific Ave.. Exhibits include art made by both local artists and those from the broader North West area. If you ever find yourself with nothing to do on a Thursday night or in need of a break, the TAM is free from 5pm to 8pm every Thursday. With free admission, you can enjoy all the beautiful art and history TAM has to offer without having to worry about the cost of a ticket.

If museums aren’t your thing and you prefer something more outdoorsy, the Point Defiance Park is only a 17 minute drive from campus. Take a moment to literally stop and smell the roses in The Rose Garden or take a well deserved break from studying while you walk along the beach. Within the park there is the The Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium where you can visit a variety of cute animals while learning an abundance of fun facts about each one.

There are also a bunch of new movies coming to theaters this fall and where better to see them then at The Grand Cinema on Fawcett Ave.. It’s the perfect place to go with friends on a Friday night to enjoy a good movie and tons of snacks from popcorn to a variety of candies. Movies range from local films to the newest releases and showtimes start as early as 11:30 am and go until 7:30 pm..

There are so many things to do around campus as well. If you are feeling creative The Maker’s Space is available to all students and has a variety of creative activities from 3D printing to knitting and crocheting. All costs of the material available in the Maker’s Space are covered by your tuition and student fees.

Metro Coffee is located on Campus just below the Tiago Library. It’s the perfect place to grab a warm drink this Fall. They have anything from coffee to breakfast and pastries. It’s also a great spot to study or gather with friends for a cup of coffee. They often have music playing and there are board games available for use too.
