Get involved with the Student Theatre Acting Guild

UW Tacoma’s Student Theatre Acting Guild is overflowing with opportunities for student involvement. This UW Tacoma club gives students the opportunity to write, design or perform for the Tacoma community. Despite the limited theatre-based curriculum at UW Tacoma, Student Theatre Acting Guild encourages creative expression and offers valuable experience outside the classroom. Anyone is able to join the UW Tacoma student theatre — and there are no prerequisites.

When asked about this year’s goals, current President Nikkia Atkinson said, “Our ultimate goal for this school year is to have an audience enjoy what we do because we love working on shows. We hope to make an impact so great that one day, years from now, we will have an auditorium to perform in.” The Tacoma community been known to support and enjoy local theatre. In previous years, the guild has seen significant turnouts for both its winter and spring productions.

Atkinson says the winter production is the next big event to participate in. “This year we will be having auditions in January for a play series centered around the military lifestyle. We would love to get the veterans on campus involved to raise awareness and thank our troops for everything they do for us. This production is really close to me since I come from a heavy military background.” With so many military families in the area, this series should prove to be significant and moving to its audiences.

Founded in 2013, the Student Theatre Acting Guild is already an important part of Tacoma’s theatre culture. During this school year, there will be plenty of chances to be a part of the club as meetings are held biweekly. The next opportunity to meet will be on Oct. 27 at 3:30 p.m. in the Joy Building, room 201. This club is excited to welcome members who are looking for something new to try on campus. At meetings, members plan upcoming projects and answer each other’s questions. The meetings are also a great opportunity to meet new people with similar interests. The club has a very active Facebook page with information about upcoming meetings and performances. UW Tacoma’s theatre club is also able to offer credit upon request while working on a production.

Atkinson would like students to know, “We exist! We are a friendly group of students that want to show the university that theatre is alive and well in Tacoma. We accept everyone even if you’ve never acted or worked on a play before.” The Student Theatre Acting Guild is excited to grow with new members and to continuously provide quality productions to the Tacoma community.
