Major Loss for Hawks

Our Seattle Seahawks were doing what they do best: making miracle plays happen. Well, up until the very last play anyway.

What should have been the biggest win of the year ended in a tragic loss. Pete Carroll, the Seahawks head coach, got away with a lot of very deep passes and risky plays up until the very end of the game where he decided to let the Seahawks quarterback, Russell Wilson, throw the ball at the half yard line. It was snatched by an interception. Our home team was a half-yard away from being national champions in the Super Bowl for the second year in a row.

Seattle had other options that could have earned them half a yard easily; the idea that was most likely rolling through everyone’s head was, “give the ball to Beast Mode!” Running back Marshawn Lynch would have surely run a touchdown with the two oppor­tunities the Seahawks had left in the game. He already scored a touchdown that tied the game in the first half and the defense was having a lot of trouble taking him down. The only reason Rus­sell Wilson may have thought it was wise to throw the ball was to be unpre­dictable. But the thing is, even if the Patriots knew Lynch was coming with the ball, their defense still wouldn’t have been able to stop him.

So the New England Patriots got away with their fourth Super Bowl Championship even after their Deflat­egate scandal. It makes you wonder if they really deserve their title. This was a heartbreaking, gut-wrenching loss for our Seattle Seahawks. I know that many UW Tacoma students had the utmost faith in their team.

As for next year, we’ll just have to see which players we lose after rumored budget cuts start to take effect. How­ever, despite the 28-24 loss, the Se­ahawks still deserve our support no matter what.
