8 UW Tacoma students accepted into Husky 100

The annual Husky 100 recognizes 100 students — undergraduate and graduate — from the Bothell, Tacoma and Seattle campuses of University of Washington who embody the Husky experience. The Husky 100 is an award for those who are doing the most with their time while a student. Applying what they have learned in the classroom, taking leadership, being committed and being passionate though it all embodies the Husky experience. This is only the second year the award has been given.

100 students, eight of whom attend UW Tacoma, were recognized for their achievement on April 10 at the HUB ballroom on the Seattle campus. Among the UW Tacoma recipients are Alishia Agee-Cooper, Ryan Hanley, Nhan D. Hoang, Asha Isaac, Cyril Johns, Jay Novelo, Ashley Righetti and Kayesee Schermerhorn. UW Bothell had seven award winners, and UW Seattle had 85.

“The Husky 100 see connections — not boundaries — between what they learn in the classroom and what they discover beyond it,” the UW website states. “They blaze pathways between subject matter and their practical experience. They grow with every observation, conversation and endeavor. They question the answer.”

Current juniors and seniors were able to apply for the award through a hefty application process. Students were also selected through nomination by faculty. In 2016, over 70 percent of winners were nominated. The application includes multiple components such as a section titled Your Story. This section can be completed using an essay, e-portfolio- or video to showcase the applicant’s story as a Husky and what they accomplished to embody the Husky 100 Criteria.

Ashley Righetti, UW Tacoma junior, was one out of eight students honored with being in the Husky 100. She is the current president of the Psychology Club, and will graduate with a major in psychology at the end of spring quarter 2017.

“As much as I love learning and being in the classroom, my experiences outside of lecture — the things that I do on top of my academic coursework — is really what has made my time at UWT so amazing,” Righetti said.

She also studied abroad in Vienna, Germany while a Husky. “There is so much more to being a Husky than just being a student. Students have the opportunity to be involved in a vast amount of things — study abroad, clubs, research, various activities,” Righetti said.

Being a recipient of the Husky 100 has perks such as invitations to exclusive events with the UW president and provost, customized career counseling – and networking opportunities.

This year’s eight UW Tacoma students will forever be apart of the exclusive Husky 100 group, along with the first 16 students from the Tacoma campus who received this award last year.

“You get different opportunities to network … you are part of a cohort that have won it in your year,” Righetti said. “I am honestly really proud of what I have been able to do over the last two years here and I encourage every student to make the most of their time as a Husky.”
