Fun events to check out this month

Spring is here in the Pacific Northwest, which means that every weekend from now till fall is packed with events and activities for just about everybody to enjoy. From food festivals to artsy events and even an end of the year block party, there’s a multitude of events held by the local community and the UWT Student Activities Board to come out and enjoy. Get ready to mark your calendar and make it an active spring season.

SAB’S THROWBACK TIMEMACHINE DANCE PARTY

SAB will be hosting The Throwback Time Machine Dance Party also known as “the craziest video dance party this side of the 21st century.” The DJ and hosts will be dropping the biggest and most memorable tracks from the past five decades. This dance party will include a huge dose of on-stage audience interaction, dance-offs, communal karaoke sessions and the big red button that will launch the course of the next musical direction. Bring your friends or join a stranger on the dancefloor, bumping tracks from the early 2000s, ’90s, ’80s, and so on.

SAB’S 2018 BLOCK PARTY

SAB is also hosting an end of the year block party celebration for student organizations, which is free for all UWT students. There will be a variety of interactive booths, food, games, prizes and even carnival rides. UWT students are encouraged to bring their families and friends for this extravaganza.

SAB’S UW TACOMA PRIDE

SAB will be hosting UWT’s first Pride event May 16 from noon to 9 p.m. in William W. Philip Hall. This will include a variety of activities such as a resource fair, guest speakers, discussion panel and a drag show. The resource fair — held from noon to 1 p.m. — will bring campus, student and community organizations together to inform students about working with and for the LGBTQIAP+ community. UWT Pride will also include a keynote speech 1–2:30 p.m. given by Julia Serano, a transgender writer, performer, activist, musician and biologist. Her speech will be followed by a Q&A segment. The event will continue with a panel of LGBTGIAP+ students and activists to “discuss their identities and the ways in which their identities intersect and inform one another, as well as their experiences with homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, etc.” A drag show will be the last event of the night, where students, faculty, staff, community and professional drag performers will put on a show.

FASA’S FIRST ANNUALSPRING BENEFIT FESTIVAL

The UWT Filipino-American Student Association will be hosting their first Annual Spring Benefit Festival. The festival’s goal is to raise money for Food for Hungry Minds, an organization that builds schools and provides food for impoverished children in the Philippines. This event will include live performances by Hannah Cho and Jessica Domingo, as well as DJ Chozen and DJ Rocryte. There will also be a photo booth for students and patrons to take photos with their friends and have a souvenir to take home.

TACOMA PROCTOR FARMERS’ MARKET

If you’re in the mood for good food, artsy knick-knacks and supporting local artists, stop by the Tacoma Proctor Farmers’ Market, every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. The market features organic produce from local farmers, live local music and tasting booths for wine and beer. There’s even a special booth for kids, filled with fun activities for your little ones to enjoy.

BROADWAY FARMERS’ MARKET

If your weekends are usually filled with other plans, the Broadway Farmers’ Market is also making a summer comeback this month. Every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Market offers a collection of specialty food producers, flower vendors and, of course, a variety of arts and crafts. The Broadway Farmers’ Market features more arts, knick-knacks and food trucks than the Proctor Market, which is slightly smaller and tends to focus on local eats.

DESTINY CITY ARTS MARKET:SATURDAY NIGHT MARKET
