Tacoma’s MultiCare Hosts 16th Annual Do Something Healthy Event

On Jan. 21st, the 16th annual Do Something Healthy event at the Tacoma Bicentennial Pavilion is expected to officially start at 6:30 pm and end at around 8 pm This year’s theme is “Finding Strength Within” to do more and take better care of your own health and life. The event is a reminder to the people in Tacoma that it is important to take their health seriously. MultiCare is a not-for-profit healthcare organization whose foundation was based in Tacoma. It is the largest provider of healthcare services in the city of Tacoma.

Do Something Healthy events in the past have featured award-winning chefs and other health advocates that have stressed the importance of a healthy diet and exercise. Local chefs include Jessica Armstrong Sewell from Tacoma’s Pacific Grill restaurant and award-winning Seattle chef, Monique Barbeau.

This year’s event will feature Amanda Beard—an Olympic gold-medalist, model, wife, and mother. She will be focusing on overcoming obstacles and setting high goals. Throughout her career, she has overcome a plethora of struggles that she will highlight in this year’s Do Something Healthy event. Beard has won seven Olympic medals in swimming and is the former world record holder in the 200-meter breaststroke. According to Beard’s official website, she participated in her first Olympic event at the age of 14. Her life achievements have motivated her to live a healthy lifestyle.

The $10 event, although officially starting at 6:30 pm, will feature a health and wellness fair at 6 pm providing screenings and health information to those interested.

Although parking is available at the Tacoma Bicentennial Pavilion, it does come with a fee. Free street parking will be available after 6 pm.

During this big month of health for the city of Tacoma, many students on campus have already been hitting up the gym and eating the right foods in order to remain healthy. UWT IT senior, Sameer Hakimi, is always motivated to stay healthy. “I workout to make sure I am fit. I also do cardio to make sure my stamina’s good and my blood is flowing,” he said. “I just want to look good and live long!” Hakimi also stated that he does his best to eat healthy, and a large reason behind that is that he believes clothes fit better when you’re healthy.

UWT freshman Rosanna Vinton, stays active by playing sports. “I like gymnastics. It’s more fun than going to the gym in order to get fit,” she said. She also stated it has continually influenced the food she eats. “I have to eat healthy to stay in shape… but chicken nuggets are still my best friend,” she stated.

If you are interested in attending this event, pre-registration is required due to its limited space. There are two ways to register: by calling1-800-485-0205 or on MultiCare’s website, multicare.org.
