Smart spending for students on a budget

With the holidays steadily approaching, budgets become harder to stick to. Students don’t always take advantage of the available discounts. Most in-person discounts only require a student ID, online discounts typically ask for a student sign in. These are just some of the discounts around the area that can help a student budget.

ONLINE DISCOUNTS

Amazon offers a free 6-month trial for Amazon Prime. After the trial expires, students receive 50 percent off Amazon Prime. Prime includes free two-day shipping, unlimited streaming of Prime movies, music and more. Spotify also offers a 50 percent student discount. Students have full access to Spotify Premium, which includes listening without advertisements, unlimited listening and better sound quality.

IN-PERSON DISCOUNTS

AMC Theater offers a student discount equivalent to a senior rate. All they need is a quick look at a student ID. YMCA membership is included in UWT tuition. Once the membership is set up at the UW Tacoma Y, students have access to any YMCA in Pierce and Kitsap County.

LOCAL DISCOUNTS

Anthem Coffee offers a 15 percent student rate by showing student ID at the register. The Renaissance Café, Subway and Happy Teriyaki offer a ten percent discount for students with a UW ID. Tacoma Art Museum offers a $2 admission discount and the Museum of Glass has free admission on Sundays with a valid student ID. Some businesses won’t specifically disclose a student discount unless the customer asks directly. Other businesses offer student rates depending on location. Parking fees, tuition payments and extra expenses add up, UW Tacoma students should take advantage of discounts. Hopefully these student discounts are able to save a few dollars where it counts.
